Three separate proposals by SHoP Architects, Dattner Architects and Present Architecture have been combined to create the new design for New York’s La Guardia airport – completely replacing the existing terminals (+ slideshow).

On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and US Vice President Joe Biden announced that the airport in the Queens borough, which consists of disconnected ageing terminals, would undergo a complete overhaul.

The project calls for tearing down the existing buildings and constructing a large, unified terminal.

The initial concept design is an amalgamation of proposals by three different New York-based firms: SHoP ArchitectsDattner Architects and Present Architecture.

Those firms submitted their ideas in 2014 as part of the governor’s Master Plan Design Competition for New York’s airports. Rather than selecting one winner, the governor extracted elements from each firm’s submission.

“New York had an aggressive, can-do approach to big infrastructure in the past – and today, we’re moving forward with that attitude once again,” said Cuomo. “We are transforming LaGuardia into a globally renowned, 21st-century airport that is worthy of the city and state of New York.”

Terminal B, also known as the Central Terminal Building, will be demolished and replaced by a larger facility, with a layout intended to reduce aircraft ground congestion and gate delays, in addition to providing a “world-class passenger experience”.

This new terminal will be linked to Terminals C and D, which also will be demolished and rebuilt. Select parking garages will also be torn down and reconstructed.

“The airport will be transformed into a single, structurally unified main terminal with expanded transportation access, significantly increased taxiway spaces and best-in-class passenger amenities,” said the governor’s office.

Passengers will access gates via raised pedestrian bridges that will be high enough for aircraft to pass under. This “island-gate system” will help create nearly two miles (3.2 kilometres) of new taxiway space.

“This allows for a more efficient circulation of aircraft and reduced taxi-in and taxi-out times, which will yield shorter and fewer gate delays – a dramatic difference from today’s LaGuardia,” said the governor’s office. “In addition, this change will produce overall reduction in carbon emissions from idling aircraft.”

“As Governor Cuomo has made clear, right now there is a once in a lifetime opportunity to implement a comprehensive design that will make LaGuardia Airport the truly world-class experience New Yorkers and visitors deserve,” said SHoP in a statement.

“SHoP is proud that our ideas for an integrated terminal could contribute to solving that urgent need at this essential gateway to the city and the state.”

Dattner Architects added: “We are extremely proud to have been able to contribute planning and design concepts in the Queens borough, which will transform LaGuardia Airport into a fully integrated multi-model development befitting New York City.”

The new terminal will be constructed closer to Grand Central Parkway, a major highway that passes by the airport.

The project also entails adding ferry service and a rail link. Direct passenger boat service to the historic LaGuardia Ferry Terminal will be restored. The plan also calls for building a new transit station that connects to the Willets Point train station in Queens.

Construction of the first phase of the project is expected to cost $4 billion (£2.5 billion). If all approvals are granted, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, will break ground in 2016.

The project will be managed by a newly established public-private consortium called LaGuardia Gateway Partners. Partners include the architecture firm HOK, construction company Skanska and engineering firm Parsons Brinckheroff.

City officials have long discussed renovating or moving La Guardia Airport. In 2014, US Vice President Joe Biden likened it to an airport one might find in a third-world country.

In a 2012 survey conducted by Travel + Leisure magazine, La Guardia was named the worst airport in the country. In a current ranking of the 29 largest American airports, La Guardia ranks last in on-time departures.

Other recent airport schemes include a new Gensler-designed terminal for animals at New York’s JFK airport and a proposal by a graduate student toelevate runways over city buildings in Stockholm.

Oh my word. I can’t tell you guys how much I love this one! Located on the coast of Uruguay, this unique beach home was designed by Argentinian architect Martín Gómez and photographed by Daniela Mac Adden. Gómez actually didn’t want any of this turquoise business *gasp*, but ended up giving in to the homeowners who really wanted the cheerful cabana stripes. They give the house so much personality, I love it! I also love how open the home is; I can practically feel that breeze going through! Anton Gorlenko, Art of Swimming (2014) – perspective view of the diving pool in Coram Fields

Takero Shimazaki and Ana Araujo

Over our years of research, Intermediate 2 has unearthed the poetics of the tactile as well as sensual architecture, often through careful study of the history of places.

This year’s focus will be the historic town of Aldermaston, Berkshire and the Aldermaston Park, a vacant estate that sits in close proximity to the Atomic Weapons Establishment plant. We will study the buildings that occupy the town and estate as well as the landscape and the garden walls. From here, strategies will be devised to re-imagine Aldermaston as a new town with a prominent role in today’s British and international scene.

The average Aldermaston resident is approximately 50 years old. Based on this demographic we will transform the town in a pioneering resort for the ageing population. Learning from other similarly visionary projects, such as the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans in France (1770s) and Cheltenham Spa in England (1820s), we will create an architectural setting to shape a new community and lifestyle.

Despite a tendency to rely on memories and tradition, British culture is also known for its innovative and eccentric inclinations. As such, Aldermaston offers a fitting environment for rethinking and re-branding old age through architecture.

Our goal is not only to transform Aldermaston into a fresh, exciting, elegant and dignified setting for the elderly, but also to challenge the social taboo with which ageing is currently associated.

How can we do this?

What is your vision?

NEXT realizes an apartment complex in the shape of Shouxi stone. The project is located on a complicated site, in the old city center of Fuzhou, the capital of the Fujian Province.

With an FAR (Floor Area Ratio) of 5.0 and many limiting conditions, a U-shaped floor plan manifested itself as optimum. The program required 400 apartments of 45-110 m2 in size, which could result in a staggering mass of identical units; to prevent this, variety and diversity is created by manipulating the balconies around the building.

Like the famous local “seal stone” or “shouxi stone,” the balconies are crafted around the main building volume. This crafting creates a wide variety of individual apartments, each with their different exterior space. On the ground floor, between the U-shaped volume, a collective “living room” for all inhabitants is created.

The architect’s description

The Barrancas House is the result of the restoration of a house built in the seventies in Mexico City, which didn´t have any attract at first but had great spatial potential.

Barrancas House By EZEQUIELFARCA architecture & design

It became a challenge for our office to create a home focusing on incredible attention to detail, modernity and discovery of the different spaces and levels to generate expectation and surprise.

Barrancas House By EZEQUIELFARCA architecture & design

We took advantage of the location of the house that has views towards the woods so we installed floor to ceiling windows so that natural elements from the exterior such as natural light, views to the woods become part of the interior without compromising the comfort and intimacy of the inhabitants.

Barrancas House By EZEQUIELFARCA architecture & design

The amenities for the family to enjoy inside the privacy of their home include a home theater, a wine cellar, a gym, 2 terraces, a pool, garden and green areas.

Barrancas House By EZEQUIELFARCA architecture & design

Discovering the house through the hallways, leads to multi-functional unpredictable spaces achieved through movable screen walls , hidden doors, bay windows that open entirely, furniture designed especially for each space, automatic lightening system, for each need of the inhabitants.

Barrancas House By EZEQUIELFARCA architecture & design

The landscape was designed with plants that adjust to the local climate, with green roof and green walls, it also has a solar energy system and a automatized water saving system.

The materials used include marble, stone, wood, together with neutral tones as dark green or chocolate that give an earthy feeling that will integrate the interior with the exterior and create the sensation of unlimited space.

Rafael Viñoly’s Walkie Talkie skyscraper in London has once again become a subject of controversy, following reports that its curved facade is channelling gusts of wind strong enough to knock people over.

Two years after being blamed for reflecting a beam of light intense enough to melt cars, the 20 Fenchurch Street tower has been accused of creating a wind tunnel, thanks to the downdraught from its 36 storeys.

An employee at the nearby Molton Brown cosmetics store told The Times: “It has only really been windy since the Walkie Talkie has been here. When they were building it and there were the building works going on, it was fine. But ever since they’ve completed it, the wind really picked up.”

The manager of a local fast-food restaurant told The Telegraph that the wind had almost caused a food trolley to be blown away, while a local sales assistant said to BBC News that she “almost got blown over walking past the building”.

Following the string of complaints about the Walkie Talkie and other skyscrapers, The City of London Corporation is now demanding independent assessment of the wind reports submitted at the planning stage, at property developers’ expense.

“The wind outcome at street level experienced post-construction on a number of projects differs somewhat to the conditions we were expecting from the one outlined in the planning application wind assessments,” said head of design Gwyn Richards.

“This is why we are asking for an independent verification of the wind studies on a number of new schemes to ensure as rigorous and resilient an approach as possible.”

In 2013 the Walkie Talkie skyscraper was reported to be reflecting a beam of light intense enough to melt cars.

The issue, known as the “downdraught effect”, occurs when wind hits a building and is forced downwards. It is most forceful when the wall faces the prevailing wind, which in Britain is from the south west.

One of the most serious incidents connected with the effect was in 2011, when a man was crushed to death near the 112-metre-tall Bridgewater Place skyscraper in Leeds, after strong winds caused a lorry to overturn.

The Fenchurch Street skyscraper, nicknamed the Walkie Talkie due to its distinctive profile, is the first London building by New York-based Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly.

It was nicknamed the Walkie Scorchie in 2013, after its facade was reportedly focusing a “death ray” onto nearby streets. Since then protective fins have been added to the building’s facade in a bid to solve the problem.
